South Beach Lifeguard Stands

These lifeguard stands had just been completed when I photographed them on Miami Beach. Their surfaces were still pristine, the colors almost unnaturally saturated beneath the hard Florida sun.

What interested me was less their function than the transformation created by color, light and point of view. Isolated against an uninterrupted blue sky, the familiar structures became compositions of planes, angles and curves — somewhere between architecture and sculpture.

I photographed them simply because I found them beautiful.
